About This Piece
Red color in a series of art prints
Red color in Jolanta Johnsson's series of prints titled "Within Certain Frames", highlights important human issues, couples, by presenting them in the context of frames. They show unique artistic approach. Jolanta is able to explore complex psychological topics.
Moreover, she delves into the intricacies of these subjects by examining their interconnections and implications. As a result, her art prints have background in a strong color. Frames frame the image and mark its boundaries. Inside the outline of frames is visible the main motif.
Shapes of frames
Frames can have different shapes and measurements. For instance, regular shapes, such as rectangles or circles, and undefined geometric figures can both contribute to the visual composition of an artwork. In fact, the latter were often used by the well-known American artist Frank Stella.
Moreover, he used different, often untypical forms.
Additionally, sometimes red color appeared not only in the painting, but also in the frame.
On the other hand, the most common form of frame is the rectangle. In this context, we can distinguish different types of rectangle frames.
Rectangular frame
A rectangular frame is suitable for framing a rectangular painting canvas. We paint on such most often.
My works on paper, and my prints, are also always rectangular.
In the series of prints, I want to show important human issues. I show that people live in limited spaces. We encounter limitations in our lives, and this is understandable for us.
No sensible person can say that 'they can do everything'. So we have to accept that. We have to accept the framework that surrounds us.
Red color is a strong artistic mean which can convey important and complicated issues. That is why it is here, in the print.
Is this not good news? Not necessarily. We can try to make ourselves comfortable in this framework, to make the picture framed within it beautiful.
The image is created during our lives. Every day we add something to it. In a certain frame, nicely designed, it can be a positive slogan.
Although sometimes we would like to break out of it.
Mixed technique enriches the message of the black figure
I have used a number of techniques in this art print. First, I coloured the fine art paper with acrylic paint od red color.
Then I printed the structure of the decorative frame from a linocut matrix.
The ink print swotted a beautiful trace on the matt surface of the coloured paper.
And then this space was inhabited by the figure by reflecting its silhouette in black ink, which creates an unusual depth of of this special color.
The result is a work that is not only visually impressive, but also tactile in its structure.
