About This Piece

Introduction to Shadow Drawings

Woman’s Shadow is a small drawing, a kind of shadow picture that I create before moving on to color painting. In essence, it is a foreshadowing of a future painting on canvas. However, shadow painting is not an easy task. Moreover, women are central in my art and will remain so—sometimes as black shadow paintings, often as portraits in shadow.

The Dual Nature of Shadow

So, how does the woman in shadow work? A shadow both shows and hides at the same time. Additionally, it carries a mysterious message. We see only the outline of a figure, while the details remain invisible. Consequently, we are left to guess who the person is.

Furthermore, the shape of her figure guides us: the black figure in the drawing is hunched over, as if trying to take up as little space as possible.

Interpreting the Woman’s Shadow

Is this woman’s shadow a sign of shyness, of embarrassment? Or does the woman in shadow exude femininity through her pose? We can only speculate. In our interpretations, we project our own emotions onto this shadow figure—and that is the point.

The role of art is to stimulate the viewer. The female shadow exists only because there is light. Paradoxically, the black shadow glorifies the presence of light in shadow painting.

Creating the Shadow Drawing

I made this woman black shadow drawing in the evening, when my studio was dark. I worked by the light of a small lamp. The dark shadow of my hunched figure was cast onto the wall, while at the same time I drew the woman’s shadow on paper. It felt as if I was inside the very shadow of the woman that emerged in my drawing.

The Challenge of Dark Shadow Painting

Dark shadow painting is not easy—it is both a challenge and an opportunity to express much with simple means. In such imagery, dark silhouettes become interpretations of shadows, and simplified human figures invite mystery. The juxtaposition of figures and shadows in figurative painting introduces understatement, a hidden meaning that invites viewers to interpret. When the woman in shadow appears, the inevitable question arises: Who is she?

The Curiosity of Shadow Images

Any person shadow drawing awakens curiosity. Human nature seeks images to interpret. The woman’s shadow plays this role perfectly: incomplete, mysterious, and deeply evocative.

Shadow Painting Ideas

In my studio, blank canvases remind me daily of the many shadow painting ideas waiting to be realised. Often, I begin with a dark shadow drawing, which then evolves into a full painting.
